Ah, finally giving props to Junot Diaz for his brilliant work “This Is How You Lose Her”! Been trying to embrace Diaz (along with Colson Whitehead) for the longest but was just not feeling him, specifically “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,” feeling that as much as he writes as if he is an outsider to the gringo experience, he sounds like he might be a big time player in the game, (which of course he is), and thus I anticipate a much more genuine and complex consideration of the worlds he negotiates—and I feel it’s incumbent upon a writer of his great ability to render those worlds intelligible for the otherwise unknowing reader. “…Lose Her” is so nuanced and covers such emotional range, fearless range!, it allows Diaz to showcase and explore so many of the worlds that he clearly knows, in ways that I believe only a writer of his caliber is capable. Much respect! (Whitehead’s “Underground Railroad” is next on my list 🙂
